    Medina Boys Tennis

State Champion with a team GPA of 97.692

Medina boys tennisA perennial league title contender on the courts, Medina High School’s boys tennis squad has proved to be equally formidable as perennial state champions in the classroom. The Mustangs compiled a composite average of 97.692, the highest of more than 600 boys tennis programs in the state. This earned them a record setting fourth NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete State Championship. The four-peat is a first for any school in any sport in the state.  “Earning it four years in a row  epitomizes the efforts of the kids. They really put academics first” said Athletic Director Matt McKenna. “It ‘s a remarkable achievement and just a wonderful honor. They are building a rich tradition.”

The Mustangs have been equally successful on the court the past three years with one Niagara Orleans League Championship and two second place finishes including a 26 match-winning streak at one stretch.

“As student athletes, these kids are involved in a lot of activities and they are very focused, very motivated and very disciplined to balance them all and be successful” said coach Chris Horgan. ”And they are very proud of this honor.”

    Schools of Distinction

NYSPHSAA announced that of the 8 schools in New York State that achieved the status of Scholar-Athlete “School of Distinction” for 2006-07, two were schools in Section 6: Clarence and Wilson. These schools achieved the “School of Distinction” status by having 100% of their interscholastic varsity sports teams earn above a 90.0% grade point average. This is the first year winning the award for Wilson with 16 teams. Clarence, with 29 teams, is receiving the award for the 3rd consecutive year. Both districts were honored and presented with the award at the Section VI Athletic Council meeting, Wed. Sept. 19 at the Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus in West Seneca.

The “School of Distinction” award, in its fifth year of existence, is the highest award handed out in the Scholar-Athlete program. The purpose of the “School of Distinction” award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams to achieve a statewide honor in addition to the already established Scholar-Athlete Team Award program was initiated in 1991-1992 school year. Of the 28 schools that have won the award since its inception in 2002-03, 9 were Section VI schools. Congratulations to Clarence, and Wilson!
