    April 2, 2007 

    Section VI crowned nine All-Americans at the National Wrestling Championships, which concluded Sunday in Virginia Beach, Va. The event is sponsored by the National High School Wrestling Coaches Association.

    The top eight places in each division earned All-American status. Angelo Malvestuto of Niagara-Wheatfield won the national title in the freshman division at 160 pounds.

    Four-time Section VI champion Matt Mariacher of Iroquois was third at 130 pounds in the senior division. Mariacher won four straight matches before losing in the semifinals to Kellen Russell of New Jersey, who was ranked No. 2 in the country. He then won two matches to place third.

    Placing fourth was Clay Reeb of Cheektowaga at 140 in the sophomore division and Kyle Colling of Pioneer at 189 in the freshman division. In the junior division, Randy Colling of Pioneer was sixth at 285, Mark Lewandowski of Lancaster was seventh at 125, Nic Stella of Sweet Home was seventh at 135 and Nick Czapla of East Aurora was eighth at 152. Among sophomores, John Micek of Maple Grove was sixth at 130.

    Coaching Notes
     
    Dennis Beck (Lancaster) broke the Section VI Coaching Wins Record (333) held by Niagara-Wheatfield’s Armand “Ace” Cacciatore on 12/22/06 with Lancaster’s 44-15 win over Williamsville North. Coach Beck is retiring and leaves Section VI with a new coaching record of 340-95-3 which he accrued during his coaching years 1976-2007. Earlier in the season, Mike Messore (St. Francis) notched his 100th career coaching victory in his 15 seasons of coaching.

    • Iroquois recorded their 600th dual meet win with their 35-24 win over Williamsville East on January 10th.
    • Franklinville had a great season – their first undefeated season (14-0) since 1992 and also clinched the Expressway Conference:

    Chris Conti (Fredonia) December 5, 2006 – Chris recorded five pins and eight wins to improve to a 9-0 on the season by winning the 112-pound weight class at the Webster Tournament. He opened the season by pinning his 119-pound opponent from Grand Island in 2:42 for his 75th career victory.
     
    Dan Carlson (Falconer) December 12, 2006 – Dan was among two champions for the Golden Falcons in the Eisenhower Tournament as he won the 130-pound title over Jon Bernard of Jamestown 5-2. Earlier in the week he pinned John Hamm of Silver Creek in 1:49.
     
    Michelle Quiles (Fredonia) December 19, 2007 - Fifth-seeded Michelle Quiles went all the way to the #103 finals of the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Tournament where she was pinned by Gare Pisani of Ridgway in 5:54. She beat Jody Fisher of Hickory, Cody Fuller of Southwestern, top-seeded Justin Hunt of Ripley and Steve Joerger of Spencerport.
     
    Austin Spicer (Falconer) January 9, 2007 – Austin captured three bouts at 145 pounds – a 2-0 victory over JJ Marucci of Frewsburg; a pin in 1:57 over Richard Jensen of Randolph; and a pin in 3:27 over David Grant of Eisenhower as Falconer ran its record to 7-0.
     
    Trevor Delahoy (Southwestern) January 17, 2007 – Second-seeded Trevor Delahoy (152) was selected the Outstanding Wrestler for the second time in three years at the Patrick Morales Memorial Tournament. Delahoy beat top-seeded Joey Riel of champion Eisenhower, 10-8, for his third Morales title after missing last year’s event because of an injury.
     
    Criag Howard (Chautauqua Lake) January 23, 2007 – Eighth grader Craig Howard raised his record to 25-4 by defeating 104-pound Bennie Haas of Salamanca 7-2, and Jerrold Roosa of Randolph 8-2. Haas and Roosa have both been honorable mention selections on the weekly rankings of the Wrestling Review of Western New York.
     
    Kenny Betts (Fredonia) January 30, 2007 – Sophomore Kenny Betts recorded three pins at 135 pounds to give him 100 for his career and 30 for this year, which is four off the Western New York record of 34 set in 1976 by Keith Stearns of Pioneer, as Fredonia won the 14-team Lewiston-Porter Tournament.
     
    Vince Liuzzo (Jametown) February 6, 2007 – Vince Liuzzo was selected the most outstanding wrestler on Saturday by winning the 145-pound title with an 8-6 overtime win over Josh Tornabene from Kenmore West at the Ken-Ton Tournament. The junior had a 3-0 record in being one of his team’s three champions.
     
    Kenny Betts (Fredonia) February 13, 2007 – Kenny Betts set a Western New York single season pin-record by recording his 36th pin when flattening Newfane’s Brad Werth in 1:50 at 135 pounds in the championship match of the Class AA Tournament. He broke the record of 35 held by keith Stearns of Pioneer in the 1970’s.
     
    Andrew Apperson (Maple Grove) February 20, 2007 – Andrew Apperson became Maple Grove’s first wrestler to qualify for the state tournament since the 1990’s as he won the 189-pound Section 6 title in the Small Schools Division by defeating Riley Gee of Fredonia, 7-5, in overtime.
     
    Kenny Betts (Fredonia) March 7, 2007 – Kenny Betts won the 135-pound state title by prevailing over Mike Tellier of  North Rose Wolcott from Section V, 8-5, on Saturday at the Times Union Center in Albany.
