Over the past 63 years, James “Jim” Walker has become an icon within the Lewiston-Porter community. As a former standout athlete, coach, and athletic director at Lewiston-Porter High School, Jim is well known for his strong presence as an invaluable representative of the Niagara Frontier League (NFL) and Section VI.
During his tenure at Lewiston-Porter, Jim successfully coached multiple sports. He is most prominently known for coaching boys’ basketball (1968 to 1973 freshman, 1973 to 2001 varsity). In 1985, he was presented with the Western New York Coach of the Year award. He was also a 22 year dedicated member of the NYSPHSAA Boys’ Basketball Committee (1991-2012).
Aside from boys’ basketball, Jim was also an accomplished football, baseball, and softball coach. He coached 9 football seasons (1968 to 1973 junior varsity, 1979 to 1982 varsity) garnering 2 divisional championships (1979 and 1980) and Section VI runner-up in 1980. In 1979, he was presented with the Western New York Coach of the Year award. He also coached baseball (1970 junior varsity, 1971-1973 varsity) and softball (1979 varsity).
In 1991, Jim took on the role of athletic director at Lewiston-Porter High School, a position which he held until 2000. He was also the Section VI Boys’ Basketball Chairman from 1991 to 2012, the NFL Boys’ Representative to the Section VI Athletic Council from 1995 to 1997, and Section VI President-Elect from 1996 to 1997.
He is a member of the Lewiston-Porter Athletic Hall of Fame as both player and coach and the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame as a player.
