Akron

In 1954, as the only junior-high and high school physical education teacher for girls, Janet Janice Sackett-Williams was responsible for all girls’ athletics.  Besides teaching duties, she coached all girls sports including basketball, swimming, synchronized swimming, softball, cheerleading, and JV and varsity field hockey.

Jan was a major factor in the development of women’s field hockey in Western  New York.  Her passion and dedication has helped to create a strong women’s sport.  She ran many summer camps, but she regularly took her team to summer camp in the Poconos - a camp created in part out of Bryn Mawr, where the woman who brought field hockey to the United States was in residence - Constance Applebee.  Miss Applebee also coached and instructed at this camp.
