Paul Hutzler is a retired postal worker and former bus driver for the Sweet Home Central School District and has spent the last 60 plus years passionately collecting and maintaining Section VI sports records.
In 1951, Paul started recording football and basketball statistics for St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute while in attendance there as a freshman. He slowly branched out to include other sports and other leagues. By 1960, his records encompassed all of Western New York. In 1975, Paul began keeping girls’ sports records. However, he was limited due to the lack of coverage of girls’ sports during that time. He also began keeping team and league state records for all boys’ sports.
Paul’s tireless efforts in saving this valuable information about WNY sports history are not limited to the information itself. He has graciously shared his knowledge of WNY sports history with Section VI whenever he has been called upon, furnishing statistics for inclusion in the Section VI football and boys’ basketball programs, and computing statistics for Upstate Football Weekly. Paul has also written 4 books to date, two of which comprised primarily of Western New York high school sports records.
In recognition for his service to Western New York high school sports; Paul has received numerous honors including: WNY High School Sports Special Service Award (1987), WNY High School Sports Appreciation Award (2000 & 2006), NYS Athletic Administrators Certificate (2001), Section VI Recognition Award (2013), WNY High School Sports Special Recognition Award (2013), Basketball Coaches Association of NY Lifetime Achievement Award (2013), and the Section VI Football Program Dedication (2014).
In 2013, Section VI was proud to announce the addition of "History by Hutzler" to the Section VI website, where member schools, parents, and students are able to explore for themselves the long, proud history of Section VI sports records and achievements.
