New York State Coaching Certification
Interscholastic Coaching provides staff development programs to meet State Education Department athletic coaching requirements. Appropriate record keeping and awarding of Coaching Registration Certificates will be provided, based on successful course completion and State Education Department guidelines. Since requirements vary for different audiences, appropriate advisement of specific requirements will be provided for certified physical education teachers, other certified teachers and non-teachers.Adult CPR/AED Course
This course (4 hours) will help individuals review their Adult CPR skills and learn Automatic External Defribrilation (AED). This training will help coaches become an integral part of their school’s AED implementation plan. As a result of this training participants will receive Red Cross Adult CPR and AED certification which is valid for one year.First Aid Skills and Knowledge (16 hours)
reviews administrative procedures in sport injuries, injury prevention, injury recognition, specific first aid responses including CPR, nutrition and substance use/abuse and taping. This course follows the SED outline for first aid skills for coaches and satisfies the state mandate. Participants successfully completing the course will receive First Aid Skills and Knowledge certification which is valid for 3 years.First Aid Skills and Knowledge Update (8 hours)
will update those coaches that have current Standard First Aid and CPR cards with the additional knowledge of administrative procedures in sports injuries, injury prevention and recognition, first aid response skills and taping procedures that are required under the SED mandate. Participants successfully completing the course will receive First Aid Skills and Knowledge certification which is valid for 3 years.Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (4 hours) will cover all the skills required to administer CPR. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Red Cross CPR certification which is valid for one year.
Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education
will review basic philosophy and principles of athletics as integral parts of physical education and general education; state, local and national regulations and recommendations related to athletics, legal considerations; function and organization of leagues and athletic associations in N.Y.S., personal standards for and responsibilities of the coach as a leader; public relations, general safety procedures, general principles of budgets, records, purchase and facilities.Option 2: On-line Experience (NEW) Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education
Includes two required onsite learning experiences.Health Science Applied to Coaching
reviews selected principles of: biology, anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, psychology and sociology related to coaching, human growth and development, safety, first aid and care of injuries, training and conditioning athletes.Option 2: On-line Experience (NEW) Health Science Applied to Coaching
Includes two required onsite learning experiences.Theory and Techniques of Coaching
emphasizes the history, objectives, rules, regulations, and recommendations, teaching methods, performance skills, technical information (offense, defense, strategy, etc.), organization and management, methods for developing, training and conditioning athletes, care and fitting of equipment, safety and officiating for designated sport. An internship in the specific sport that is being coached is required as part of course completion.Option 2: On-line Experience (NEW) Theory and Techniques of Coaching
